 Professional Learning

The Why

The motivation behind advocating for an alternative model of Professional Learning (PL) in Crosby ISD is deeply rooted in recognizing the limitations and inadequacies of the traditional 'sit and get' approach to PL," as highlighted by Gulamhussein (2013). "This realization came from firsthand experience as an educator witnessing the disconnect between PL and practical classroom application. The backstory is filled with frustrations stemming from a lack of personalization, minimal opportunities for engagement, and the absence of ongoing support. The precedents for change are evident in success stories from other institutions that have transitioned to more interactive, context-specific, and teacher-focused PL models. The relevance of this change extends beyond my personal experience; it's a necessity for modern education, given the evolving needs and expectations of students and the demands of the 21st-century classroom.

The What

Through meaningful professional learning, teachers can embrace creativity by offering choice, ownership, voice, and authenticity. This hands-on experience helps teachers relate to their students and extend a similar opportunity to them.

The How

Creating the presentation involved several key steps. I started by outlining the content and structure of the presentation, which I later divided into slides to ensure a coherent flow. At first, I used Genially to design the slides but ultimately used Canva. To provide a visual representation of the PL model, I used graphic design software that's already embedded in Canva to create an infographic. The infographic showcases the five key principles of effective PL. I conducted research to gather relevant statistics, data, and success stories to support the importance of switching to the alternative PL model. All sources used were appropriately credited. Additionally, I documented my creative process by taking screenshots of my workspace, including the slide design in Genially. These images offer insight into the tools and techniques I employed to develop the presentation and infographic.

By blending the textual and visual elements in this presentation, I aim to effectively communicate the significance of transitioning to a more engaging and research-supported PL model. This multimedia approach aligns with the principles of effective communication, making the content accessible and engaging for a diverse audience.
